Gastroscopy is a test that is done to check the inside of the stomach, esophagus (food pipe), and the small bowel (also known as the small intestine). During the procedure, a special tube, known as the gastroscope, is used. A gastroscope is long and flexible and has a light and tiny camera at the tip.
Why is the Purpose of the Procedure?
A Gastroscopy might be done to find out the underlying cause of the following symptoms:
- Passing black poo
- Blood in the poo
- Abnormal bleeding
- Drastic weight loss
- Iron deficiency anemia (low levels of iron)
- Heartburn or indigestion that keeps coming back
- Painful or difficult swallowing
Those with Barrett’s esophagus are required to have regular gastroscopies. The procedure is done to check if there are any changes in the cells found in the lining of the food pipe that can lead to cancer. When needed, biopsies or samples of abnormal looking areas will be taken. The samples are sent to the laboratory to be examined.
How Can One Prepare for a Gastroscopy?
Blood tests might be done before the procedure to check the blood level and how well it clots. If you are taking maintenance medications, you need to inform your doctor about it so they will know if you are taking something that changes how your blood clots.
It is likely that you will be asked to stop taking said medications for the time being before your procedure. You will be asked not to eat for six hours before your scheduled gastroscopy. Often, a written instruction is provided before your appointment. You will also be asked about your medical history and any allergies you might have.
What Happens During the Gastroscopy?
Gastroscopy is typically done as an outpatient procedure. This means you can go home within the same day. The test will only take at least 15 minutes. However, it is expected that you will have to stay in the hospital or the clinic for a few hours.
Your heart rate and blood pressure will also be checked. The procedure will be explained to you and you will be asked to sign a consent form. Typically, you will be sedated during the test. However, if you wish to be awake while the procedure is done, an anesthetic is sprayed with an anesthetic.
If you wear glasses or you have false teeth, you will be asked to remove them. You will be asked to wear a plastic guard to protect your teeth.
What Can One Expect After the Procedure?
Your doctor will discuss with you how the procedure went after. You will be informed if any biopsies were taken and when you can expect the results. After the procedure, you might expect some discomfort and bloating. This uncomfortable feeling can last for a few hours.
If you have not been sedated during gastroscopy, you can go home immediately after the test. However, you will be advised not to drink or eat anything until the effects of the local anesthetic spray has worn off. Usually, it would take an hour. If you were sedated, you need to stay in the hospital for at least an hour or two.
Typically, the biopsy results will take a week or two but you will be informed of any other findings that can be determined right after the procedure. Waiting for the results can be an anxious time for many patients. It would help if you speak with your doctor or a trusted loved one about how you feel.
